In late 2023, the Michael Reid congregation of galleries and creative platforms instituted an overarching, formal governing Board of Directors. This is a first for a commercial art gallery in Australia. The Board holds the Executive Team accountable for their commitments while introducing fresh analysis, providing new direction and identifying tangible business opportunities across the group. Working collaboratively and in formation, the Executive Team, comprised of Michael Reid, Toby Meagher, Daniel Soma, and Robert Carlino, will execute operational actions. Andrew Grant<\/strong><\/p>\n

An engineer with an MBA from the prestigious Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Grant worked for many years as a consultant with McKinsey & Company before founding Virgin Mobile. Over the last decade, Grant has worked internationally in senior positions in private health. Today, as CEO of Medteryx Digital Health, he is in the early research and development stage of AI-assisted diagnostic tools and digital therapeutics for mental health care. Grant is also a serious amateur photographer.<\/p>\n

Kimberly Holden<\/strong><\/p>\n

Non-Executive Director Kimberly Holden is the Founder and CEO of Doctor V Pty Ltd. She previously served as the principal of Jord Bellows International Pty Ltd, a manufacturing operation specialising in bespoke products for the process industry throughout Australia and Asia. Their clientele included Shell, BHP, and Rio Tinto. Holden has also held positions as a former member of the Strategic Planning Unit at Cable & Wireless Worldwide in Singapore, an Executive Director at Singapore Telecom, and a manager at Swiss Bank Corporation (UBS) in Sydney. Additionally, she is an art collector of note.<\/p>\n

Trevor attended the MIT Sloan School of Management in Boston after earning a degree in electrical engineering in Australia. Now based in Seattle, Trevor has broad experience as an executive and investor with companies in growth-oriented markets. He was a General Partner at Frazier Healthcare Ventures, a leading healthcare venture capital, and private equity investment firm. Trevor serves on several Boards of Directors of private and public companies.\u00a0 Trevor is also a commercial, multi-engine pilot with an instrument rating and is a Certified Flight Instructor. He is an active pilot with Angel Flight West providing free flights for passengers traveling for medical care and other needs.<\/p>\n

As Sydney Gallery Manager, Dean brings strong curatorial expertise, a deep understanding of gallery operations, and longstanding relationships with artists and collectors. His leadership will ensure our flagship Chippendale gallery continues to thrive as a vital platform for artist development, institutional engagement, and collector outreach. In addition, Dean is on a pathway toward directorship \u2014 a reflection of both his exceptional capability and the strategic importance of this role within the business.<\/p>\n

Over the last decade, Dean has worked at the highest levels of the art world, making it his personal and professional quest to showcase important Australian artists and artworks to an ever-growing audience of collectors. Most recently, as Manager of the Michael Reid Beyond program, he has overseen its success as a dynamic, moveable gallery arm, staging temporary exhibitions in artists\u2019 studios, empty buildings, outdoor settings and regional locations.<\/p>\n

Alongside the Directors and in close collaboration with artists, Dean curates and manages an annual exhibition program that brings together significant new works with carefully selected pieces from the secondary market. With a strong focus on client service and extensive knowledge of contemporary Australian and New Zealand art, he takes a bespoke approach to the acquisition and placement of artworks in both private and institutional collections.<\/p>\n

Calum is an emerging curator and arts writer working across Gadigal and Palawa land. He fell in love with art at an early age and now seeks to share this passion by connecting collectors with artists whose work inspires and moves them.<\/p>\n

He brings experience in organising and curating large-scale arts festivals to his role at Michael Reid Northern Beaches, where he helps oversee exhibition development and client liaison.<\/p>\n

Calum holds an Honours degree in Art History from the University of Sydney, with a particular focus on Australian photography and its histories. Gabriel is an emerging graphic designer with a passion for fine art. He joined Michael Reid Galleries in 2025 in the newly created role of Marketing Assistant after graduating from Western Sydney University in 2024 with a Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication).<\/p>\n

Gabriel applies his visual sensibilities and exceptional skills in graphic design, photography and video editing to the promotion and amplification of our five galleries\u2019 programs across various social media channels and other digital platforms. Developing bespoke exhibition branding and beautifully designed marketing collateral, Gabriel supports the practices of our artists by presenting their work to our online audiences through sophisticated visual storytelling and original content.<\/p>\n

Fine art logistics expert Robert Carlino brings more than 18 years of experience to his role as Head of Group Operations and Logistics for the Michael Reid network of galleries. Robert provides exceptional registrar and logistical service for the business, exhibiting artists and rapidly expanding audience.<\/p>\n

Robert has dedicated his entire professional life to serving the arts in Australia, previously holding esteemed positions in well-known commercial art galleries. From curating to corporate and private art consultation, event management and international negotiation, Robert brings a wealth of experience to the business and our customers.<\/p>\n

Robert studied his Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) at the university of Western Sydney where he majored in painting. Abstract Expressionist and Surrealist works move him most.<\/p>\n

Rebecca spent 25 years working in the hospitality industry in Australia, England, Scotland, Italy and Barbados with 18 years managing the front desk at Quay restaurant in Sydney.<\/p>\n

A love of art was instilled in her at an early age with frequent trips to the NGV in Melbourne, where at the age of five she was admonished by a security guard for hugging the feet of Betram Mackennal\u2019s life size bronze \u2018Circe\u2019.<\/p>\n

Jonathan graduated from Sydney College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art where he became fascinated with art, design and film. This led to a career working in the film industry in Australia and around the world.<\/p>\n

Further study at Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) was followed by working as a Cinematographer & Editor, as well as making music videos and documentaries.<\/p>\n

After leaving the industry to run his own business, he has returned to image-making, working primarily as a stills photographer, though client requests means that he is still involved in video production. As well as photographing for Michael Reid, he also maintains a freelance practice focussed on Architectural photography.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Amber Creswell Bell is a curator, writer, artist mentor and public speaker widely regarded for her dedicated support of Australian creative initiatives. Amber has an eye for talented emerging painters and has built a cult following with her decade of curating and championing their work in hundreds of exhibitions including six years when she was director of Emerging Art at Michael Reid. Amber is the co-founder and current Creative Director of the National Emerging Art Prize and has curated the prize since it was established in 2021. Amber has published six art books with Thames & Hudson to date: Her first book,\u00a0Clay<\/em>, released October 2016, showcases over 50 contemporary ceramic artisans from Australia and abroad. Amber\u2019s second book, A Painted Landscape<\/em>, released in October 2018, profiles the diverse work of 50 of Australia\u2019s landscape painters. 2021 saw the release of Amber\u2019s monograph on artist Ken Done, Art. Design. Life<\/em>, as well as Still Life<\/em> \u2013 a compilation of Australian still life painters, which won Illustrated Non-fiction Book of the Year at the Indie Book Awards. Australian Abstract<\/em> was released in March 2023, and was awarded Illustrated Book of the Year at the Australia Book Industry Awards. Her most recent book, About Face<\/em>, was released in September 2024. Her seventh book, on contemporary photography, will be released in September 2025.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Hugh is an emerging arts professional based on Gadigal country. He joins the gallery after gaining experience at auction houses in Europe and interning at cultural institutions across Australia, most recently at the National Portrait Gallery. Hugh contributes to projects and client services, working across the Michael Reid Sydney and Beyond programs.<\/p>\n

He holds a Bachelor of Art History and Curatorship as well as a Bachelor of Classics from the Australian National University. Hugh is particularly fascinated by patronage throughout art history, with a strong interest in contemporary Australian art on the world stage.<\/p>\n

Edward Humphrey is a practising artist with a passion for portraiture. Since graduating in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the National Art School, he has developed a distinct painting style that draws on elements of abstraction and realism. <\/span>Edward has been a finalist in several major art prizes, including the 2020 Archibald Prize, which featured his portrait of musician Stan Walker. In his role at Michael Reid Sydney, Edward assists with artwork installation, deliveries and events, helping the gallery teams ensure all operations run smoothly.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Since 2016, Thomas has gained extensive experience in the Sydney art world working for a variety of local galleries, involved with all aspects of operations. Most notably at S.H. Ervin Gallery where he continues to perform his role as an Exhibition Installer, as well as working with Manly Art Gallery as a Weekend Gallery Coordinator.<\/p>\n

Christopher Mathews combines over thirty years of experience in financial markets, in Australia, Europe, and London, with a lifelong passion for collecting, viewing and studying art. For the past twenty years, his role has seen him as a trusted advisor and confidant to high net worth individuals and family offices in Sydney, rural Australia, Hong Kong, and London.<\/p>\n

This level of trust, understanding of client needs, and ability to deliver positive outcomes translates to the acquiring and curating of collections for MRG clients, both individual and corporate. His ability to act as a bridge from financial asset classes to contemporary art is acknowledged and valued by clients.<\/p>\n

Christopher\u2019s clients and service range from those looking at initial purchases to highly experienced, long term collectors adding to established collections. His personal journey as a collector and client has enabled him to tailor the client experience to suit the requirements and wishes of collectors, large and small. This includes guiding corporate entities through upcoming exhibitions, gallery events and the hosting of client-focussed engagement within the gallery.<\/p>\n

Toby is deeply committed to Michael Reid Galleries and the long term development of the business, its artists and its collectors. Toby plays a key role in the direction and management of the business, working closely with Michael on strategy for the galleries individually, and as a group. With a particular interest in client service, Toby brings a straightforward and informed approach to acquisition advice and collection management.<\/p>\n

In 2019 Toby became a Partner at Michael Reid Galleries. He has been with the business for eight years and has worked in every conceivable role from intern to installer; Berlin Director to van driver. He has developed an intimate understanding of the three physical galleries and the online spaces within the Michael Reid network.<\/p>\n

Art Fairs are a particular passion for Toby and he has been a driving force behind the gallery\u2019s presentation at Art Fairs since 2018. Toby believes that Art Fairs are the perfect opportunity to service our clients, highlight our artists and elevate the Michael Reid brand amongst its peers.
\nBeyond his work with Michael Reid, Toby has a particular interest in photography, post-colonial narratives and Indigenous voices in contemporary Australian art: from urban practices to remote communities. Toby also runs a small wine label with friends out of Mudgee, NSW, and is a keen fly fisherman.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

In addition to her role as gallery manager at Michael Reid Northern Beaches, Sophie Nolan is a celebrated ceramicist whose striking, sensually formed pieces have featured in solo exhibitions at the gallery as part of our Michael Reid Clay program.<\/p>\n

Using traditional hand-building techniques, Sophie crafts wonderfully nuanced, curvaceous vessels whose subtle imperfections convey a sense of individualism tied to their celebration of the human form.<\/p>\n

Sophie honed her aesthetic sensibilities with studies in Visual Communications and many years working as a graphic designer before pursuing her passion for ceramics. Her background in graphic design has given her a keen eye for balance and detail, which continues to inform her art practice and enriches her work at the gallery.<\/p>\n

As an artist who lives and works on the Northern Beaches, Sophie is deeply enmeshed in the area\u2019s creative community while engaging with a broader network of interior stylists, designers, and fashion retailers who regularly feature her pieces in their spaces.<\/p>\n

With nearly four decades in the art industry, Michael Reid is one of Australia\u2019s leading art dealers. His cultural commentary\u2014sought across television, print, and social media\u2014underscores his role as an ambassador for Australian art. On Australia Day 2016, Michael was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the arts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney, and a Master\u2019s in Arts Administration (Art Business) from the University of New South Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a decade with Christie\u2019s in London and Australia\u2014including establishing a major representative office for Christie\u2019s in Brisbane\u2014Michael made history by holding Australia\u2019s first stand-alone photography auction in Melbourne in 1992. He later contributed a weekly <\/span>Art Market Analyst<\/span><\/i> column to <\/span>The Australian<\/span><\/i> newspaper\u2019s business section for a decade, taught Art Business at the then College of Fine Arts, UNSW, and went on to write a weekly column for the <\/span>Sydney Morning Herald<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The Age<\/span><\/i>\u2019s <\/span>Good Weekend<\/span><\/i> magazine for five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael is the author of <\/span>Guide to Australian Art Galleries<\/span><\/i> (2005) and <\/span>How to Buy & Sell Art<\/span><\/i> (2008, 2010), published by Allen & Unwin. He also co-authored <\/span>Australian Art: Who, When, What and How Much?<\/span><\/i> (2011) and <\/span>Nathan Taylor: The Poetics of Excess<\/span><\/i> (2012) with Emily Cloney.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond print, Michael\u2019s reputation as a cultural commentator led to co-hosting Sky Business News Channel\u2019s <\/span>Art Industry Hour<\/span><\/i> (2008\u201309) and anchoring a regular arts segment on ABC Radio\u2019s <\/span>Drive Time<\/span><\/i>. Recognising that Australian art transcends geography, Michael\u2014Chairman & Director of the Michael Reid group\u2014oversees three galleries in Sydney, two in regional New South Wales, and one in Berlin, Germany. The network also embraces digital platforms including Michael Reid CLAY, Michael Reid Object, and Michael Reid LAND. In 2021, together with colleagues in the Sydney gallery, he established the National Emerging Art Prize.<\/span><\/p>\n

For all his gravitas, Michael keeps a sense of humour. Once Recess Milk Monitor at Narrandera Primary School, he also appeared in 1983 on <\/span>Ford New Faces<\/span><\/i>, singing with the Queens College (University of Melbourne) all-male choir. The ensemble, \u201cbreathtakingly audacious\u201d but admittedly talentless, lost in the final round to a harmonica player.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael was co-founder of the decade-long Sydney-based festival <\/span>Art Month Sydney<\/span><\/i>, founder of Berlin\u2019s Ackerstrasse \u201cOpen Street,\u201d and a former Director and Deputy Chair of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW (now Sydney Living Museums). In 2021, he joined the St Paul\u2019s College Foundation within the University of Sydney. He is also a member of the Law Society of New South Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has judged and advised widely across the arts, including the 2016 Head On Photo Festival, the <\/span>Australian Financial Review<\/span><\/i>\u2019s True Leaders Award (2017), and Christie\u2019s Education London Art World Professional Advisory Panel (2017\u20132023). In 2019, <\/span>Country Style<\/span><\/i> magazine named him one of the 30 most significant figures in regional Australia over the past 30 years. In 2022, <\/span>News Corp Australia<\/span><\/i> listed Michael Reid among the 100 most influential people in the Australian arts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael remains across every aspect of his business, although he does not immerse himself in day-to-day detail. For him, creative business-building requires distance from the here and now. His singular dedication is to new business development. At present, as Chairman of the board, Michael is bedding down what is Australia\u2019s first independent, professionally remunerated art gallery board of directors. The Board holds the galleries Executive Team accountable for their commitments while introducing fresh analysis, providing new direction, and identifying tangible business opportunities across the group.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside this governance focus, Michael is working with Directors Daniel Soma and Toby Meagher on expanding the <\/span>Beyond<\/span><\/i> program, with exhibitions planned for Washington DC and Darwin in the Northern Territory. He is also exploring a new exhibition space in Los Angeles and expanding the presence of American heritage brand Filson at the Concept Store in Murrurundi\u2014a retail venture that has been close to his heart for the past decade.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025, Michael repositioned the National Emerging Art Prize to include a dedicated Photography Prize and is in the throes of establishing a nationwide gallery representative program. At the Murrurundi gallery, the new food and beverage offering entitled <\/span>The Pizza Shed<\/span><\/i>\u2014envisioned as an early 20th-century Australian walk-in meat room, complete with flyscreens and a butcher\u2019s block\u2014is taking shape. Ronan is an alumnus of the University of Sydney, graduating in 1985 with an Arts Degree majoring in Art History and gaining a post graduate Diploma in Museum Studies in 1987.<\/p>\n

From 1985 until 1987 Ronan was the gallery assistant at the David Jones\u2019 Art Gallery, under the guidance of the adviser Robert Haines and the manager Peta Phillips, and during that time worked on a broad range of exhibitions ranging from contemporary Australian and International Art, Australian ceramics, to Fine and Decorative Art.<\/p>\n

In 1988 Ronan worked for the Campbell Group compiling \u201cW.H.A.T: a national guide to all the galleries and museums in Australia\u201d, and was then employed as an assistant curator by the Historic Houses Trust, (Sydney Living Museums) to catalogue the contents of Rouse Hill House prior to its opening to the public.<\/p>\n

From 1989 until early 1995 he lived in London working as head cataloguer for the Lots Road Auction Rooms in Chelsea before being recruited by Christie\u2019s Australia to become the decorative arts expert and auctioneer in Sydney. During this time he helped catalogue and sell many storied collections including The Whiteman Collection, The Eric Dare Collection, the John Schaeffer Collection at Rona, Bronte House, and others.<\/p>\n

When the Christie\u2019s Australian sale rooms reverted to representative office in 2006, Ronan was made the international representative for Christie\u2019s, a role he held until March 2020. During this time he was responsible for many important international sales and also purchases by Australian clients as well as being one of the auctioneers in the bi-annual sale seasons at Christie\u2019s Hong Kong. He is also a popular charity auctioneer for many arts and charitable organisations such as the Australian Museum, Firstdraft Gallery, the Centenary Foundation, the Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital and others. He now works on a freelance basis for private clients and businesses as well as local auction houses.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Widely considered among the finest Australian art specialists of her generation, Nicola Townsend brings her expertise to the role of Art Advisor at Michael Reid. Nicola sources artworks for sale by the gallery and liaises with collectors to determine their acquisition needs, guided by her extensive experience and discerning eye.<\/div>\n
\nNicola obtained a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Fine Arts from the University of Sydney before joining the prestigious auction houses Sotheby\u2019s and Christie\u2019s, where she rose to the position of Associate Director of Paintings. Not one to rest on her laurels, Nicola went on to establish a highly successful art-dealing consultancy in Tokyo and Hong Kong over a period of nine years before returning to Sydney.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is a first for a commercial art gallery in Australia. An engineer with an MBA from the prestigious Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Grant worked for many years as a consultant with McKinsey & Company before founding Virgin Mobile. Over the last decade, Grant has worked internationally in senior positions in private health. Today, as CEO of Medteryx Digital Health, he is in the early research and development stage of AI-assisted diagnostic tools and digital therapeutics for mental health care. Grant is also a serious amateur photographer.<\/p>\n

Non-Executive Director Kimberly Holden is the Founder and CEO of Doctor V Pty Ltd. She previously served as the principal of Jord Bellows International Pty Ltd, a manufacturing operation specialising in bespoke products for the process industry throughout Australia and Asia. Their clientele included Shell, BHP, and Rio Tinto. Holden has also held positions as a former member of the Strategic Planning Unit at Cable & Wireless Worldwide in Singapore, an Executive Director at Singapore Telecom, and a manager at Swiss Bank Corporation (UBS) in Sydney. Additionally, she is an art collector of note.<\/p>\n

Trevor attended the MIT Sloan School of Management in Boston after earning a degree in electrical engineering in Australia. Now based in Seattle, Trevor has broad experience as an executive and investor with companies in growth-oriented markets. He was a General Partner at Frazier Healthcare Ventures, a leading healthcare venture capital, and private equity investment firm. Trevor serves on several Boards of Directors of private and public companies.\u00a0 Trevor is also a commercial, multi-engine pilot with an instrument rating and is a Certified Flight Instructor. He is an active pilot with Angel Flight West providing free flights for passengers traveling for medical care and other needs.<\/p>\n
