Petrina Hicks is an Australian artist based in Sydney, working with large format analogue photography she creates large-scale photographs that draw from mythology, fables, and historical art imagery to re-frame the contemporary female experience.<\/p>\n

Permeated with a sense of magical realism, animals and females often appear together to represent aspects of psyche and identity, alluding to the complexity of female identity and the sentience of animals.<\/p>\n

The porous boundaries between human and animal states and the affinity of females and animals are central to her work.<\/p>\n

Time travelling between past and future histories, Hicks re-imagines myths, historical art imagery and fables, placing female stories at the centre with reference to female deities, cliches of femininity and invisible women.<\/p>\n

Myths, fables and folklore help us to understand the nature of the world; of being human, animal and the divine.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n
